Over 70 RTSA members and guests were treated to an insightful presentation at the Western Australian Engineers Australia Offices on Wednesday 22nd April 2009 from Peter Newman, Professor of Sustainability, Curtin University.Peter highlighted some emerging trends and realities regarding the growth of our economy, our cities and also our transport systems. He showed that rail has a growing market share and also a large role in the future of our cities.
He also enlightened the group on the changes of attitude slowly occurring and also very necessary to support future society. Cost benefit considerations must now include consideration of carbon ratings and also benefits that can be realised with higher density centres.
Peter showed that sustainability and the way forward involves a complete change in thinking and that now is the perfect opportunity to re-consider the old models of growth and development.
Keep an eye out for the next WA Chapter presentation (Thursday 28th May 2009) which will explore Railway Management on a Holiday Island by Paolo Amaranti, CEO of Rottnest Island Association.
