Enter our video competition!
Make a video… a documentary, musical, action film, horror movie, drama, reality show, comedy, or adventure - whatever, you decide! Just ensure it’s:
- About Railway;
- Maximum 180 seconds long;
- Suitable for all audiences; and
- Get it to us by midnight on Sunday, 11 October, 2009!
The competition is open to all students in engineering, computer science and information technology under the age of 35; as well as high school students in year 10-12 throughout NSW.
Entering the competition is completely free.
Winners will be contacted by email or phone, and announced on the home page of our website, at the beginning of November 2009.
Profiles of winners & their video will be put on the RTSA NSW website and on top of our YouTube Channel, and videos may be used for publicity in the future. By entering, you’ll be having your say, helping tell others about Railway, and having a great time!

In addition to the adulation of your peers, professors, family, and strangers who may view it, some videos may appear on the RTSA website and used to promote RTSA and the Railway Industry. Plus, there are cash prizes available in two categories!
Category One: Students aged 16 - 20
First Prize: $500

First Prize: $500 + Attendance at a local railway related conference or meeting

“So how do I enter?”
Make your video
We invite aspiring filmmakers to produce short videos that promote the chosen topic in 180 seconds.
- Entries can be provided by individuals or teams with at least one university student or high school participant and a maximum of six students per group.
- More than one video is permissible.
Note:
Filming and photography on Railway property is subject to the approval of RailCorp. When entering a station, make yourself known to a CityRail or CountryLink staff member and let them know what you plan to do. At unattended stations, use the commuter phone to contact a staff member.

Please note that for safety and operational reasons, RailCorp may not give permission to film or photograph at busy stations or around 6.00am-10.00am, 2.00pm-7.00pm) or during special events.
Entry to any RailCorp property, including stations, is at your own risk.
You will be briefed on safety requirements. You must comply with any directions given by station staff or transit officers.
While on RailCorp property, you must comply with the same rules as their customers.
You must be in possession of a valid ticket to enter the paid area of the station.
While on RailCorp property, you must not:
- enter areas not accessible to the public
- obstruct the flow of people through the station, or climb on equipment or signs
- direct lights or flashes in the direction of oncoming trains as this may pose a hazard to our staff
- film or photograph surveillance cameras, security-related equipment or graffiti.
Upload it to YouTube
If you don’t already have a YouTube account, you’ll need to set one up by clicking the “Sign Up” button at youtube.com. Once you have an account, visit www.youtube.com/my_videos_upload to upload your video.
Add it to the competition group In order for your video to be part of the competition; it needs to become part of the RTSATube Group on YouTube. First join the group, and then add your video.
Fill out an entry form.
Finally, fill out the entry form so that we can capture some details about you and your video - and enter you into the appropriate prize category. Your video will be excluded from the competition without an entry form.
Video Submission Specifications:
In order to be eligible, each Video Submission must comply with the following:
1. The video must be:
- Of broadcast quality;
- A maximum 180 seconds long;
- Aimed at 16-to-20-year-old student audience.
2. The video must fall within one of these three topics:
- Sustainable Railway
- Rail Revolution: faster & heavier
- Railways without Borders: linking cities, connecting people
3. The video must discuss the selected topic in a way that the other youth can relate to and not be stereotypical or disrespectful to any group’s beliefs and cultures, i.e. not giving any offence to any race, religion or language.
4. The video must not be filmed under unsafe conditions. It also must not contain unsafe acts or situations, or encourage the audience entering hazardous places.
5. The film must have been made by the persons who upload it. Students may receive guidance from teachers but the work submitted must be their own.
6. All submissions must be original (both audio and video material) - copyright material is the responsibility of the student. Permission is to be obtained where necessary.
Video submissions which do not reasonably correspond to on of the topics may be disqualified. RTSA reserves the right to cancel or modify this competition, or not publish any video submission; in the event an insufficient number of entries are received that meet the eligibility requirements.
Start / End Dates
The competition is open for entries on 7 August 2009 and ends at midnight Australian Eastern Standard Time on 11 October, 2009.
Voting period for the “Voter’s favourite” prize: 19 October - 31 October 2009.
Judging
Proposals and videos will be initially judged internally by the competition’s working group members (pre-screening). Shortlisted videos will be re-judged by a panel of “distinguished judges” made up of professionals from the railway industry, who will each have the appropriate knowledge and experience to apply the Judging criteria. When choosing the winning entries, the judges will be looking for:
- How creatively and originally the video promotes the chosen topic;
- How well the video communicates to a youth audience; and
- Basic film-making ability.
Voter’s favourite: winners will be chosen by a total point score made up of YouTube ratings, views, and favourites.
The Boring Legal Stuff
The organiser, defined as RTSA:
- Will not insure the entries they receive or be responsible for the loss or damage of the entries;
- Reserve broadcast, publication, reproduction and exhibition rights to the entries received without requiring the permission of the participants;
- Have the right to disqualify any entry based on non-compliance with the rules and regulations, and any copyright infringements;
- Will not be liable for any copyright infringement on the part of the participants; and
- Reserve the right to modify the rules and regulations of the competition without any prior notice.
