Dwayne Allan, Engineering Manager Siemens Australia will define the requirements of a track vacancy detection system explaining the difference between track circuits and axle counters. Dwayne will then dispel the myths about axle counters and explain the advantages they have over track circuits.

David Caldwell, Urban Transport Engineer, will speak about the underlying purpose of rail transport as against a freeway. he will discuss the relationship between urban living and transport. A key part of the presentation will be a 1958 short film by General Electric explaining the problems with car-based urbanisation.

NZ Chapter - Lengthening the Aratere
During 2011 the Aratere Roll-On Roll-Off ferry underwent a significant modification. Peter Clarke, Interislander’s Project Director, will present on the project and its goals, and discuss what was achieved and the many challenges that were faced.

STORE2012 - Hunter Valley Coal Chain
A 3-day Study Tour of Railway Engineering will be held in March 2012 to examine the extensive enhancement works currently underway to the coal chain in the Hunter Valley of NSW. The study will include site visits to Control Centres, a locomotive maintenance shop and coal loading facilities at a mine and the port. A number of speakers will also provide details of the planned upgrading projects to rail and mine infrastructure in the valley together with the latest technologies being used to improve performance of the track and reduce fuel consumption on locomotives. A highlight of the STORE will be a one day 2-car Diesel train trip from Maitland to Ulan and Gulgong and return, which will also allow delegates to see the rail construction works and the extensive coal train traffic first-hand.
2013 Thesis Awards Advanced Notification
Advanced notification is given of the Railway Engineering Student Thesis Award and the Wheel-Rail Interface Award both of which are to be made in 2013. Nominations will not close until 30 November 2012 and the official Call for Nominations will not be made until later this year. However, early notice now is given so that suitable railway-related topics might be selected for final year theses. For further details please refer to Awards/Honours.
