NSW Chapter - Urbanisation, Transport and Learnings for Sydney

David Caldwell, Urban Transport Engineer, will speak about the underlying purpose of rail transport as against a freeway. he will discuss the relationship between urban living and transport. A key part of the presentation will be a 1958 short film by General Electric explaining the problems with car-based urbanisation.

STORE2012 - Hunter Valley Coal Chain

A 3-day Study Tour of Railway Engineering will be held in March 2012 to examine the extensive enhancement works currently underway to the coal chain in the Hunter Valley of NSW. The study will include site visits to Control Centres, a locomotive maintenance shop and coal loading facilities at a mine and the port. A number of speakers will also provide details of the planned upgrading projects to rail and mine infrastructure in the valley together with the latest technologies being used to improve performance of the track and reduce fuel consumption on locomotives. A highlight of the STORE will be a one day 2-car Diesel train trip from Maitland to Ulan and Gulgong and return, which will also allow delegates to see the rail construction works and the extensive coal train traffic first-hand.

NSW - The London Crossrail Project

Dr Mark Raiss of URS/Scott Wilson will introduce the Crossrail scheme, Europe’s single largest infrastructure project with a current budget of £14.5bn. Mark will explain the history of Crossrail’s development, describe what it entails, the service it will provide and the funding mechanisms to achieve those ends.
