The Deltic Locomotive

In 1955 the English Electric Company designed and built the prototype of a new and powerful diesel-electric locomotive, using the Napier Deltic opposed-piston engine. The Deltic subsequently became Class 55 of British Rail, 22 such Deltics serving well for over 20 years.

Over 70 RTSA members and guests were treated to an insightful presentation at the Western Australian  Engineers Australia Offices on Wednesday 22nd April 2009 from Peter Newman, Professor of Sustainability, Curtin University.Peter highlighted some emerging trends and realities regarding the growth of our economy, our cities and also our transport systems. He showed that rail has a growing market share and also a large role in the future of our cities.
